A brooch in the shape of a knot, made from navy, fuchsia, and pink paper cords. A smaller white knot with pearls is on top.

Mizuhiki

Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese craft involving knots tied from paper cords. It is most commonly seen on gift envelopes and jewelry, but there are also elaborate sculptures made out of mizuhiki knots for special occasions like engagement ceremonies.

I made the above brooch at Kanazawa’s Hiraoka Yuinōho (平岡結納舗) under the guidance of mizuhiki artist Hiraoka Shizuko (平岡慎子).
