<math display="block"><msup><mi>a</mi><mn>2</mn></msup><mo>+</mo><msup><mi>b</mi><mn>2</mn></msup><mo>=</mo><msup><mi>c</mi><mn>2</mn></msup><mi>.</mi></math>

There are many proofs, but my favourite is a proof by diagram. Arrange four copies of the triangle in a square with side length <math><mi>a</mi><mo>+</mo><mi>b</mi></math> in two different ways. In the first the leftover space forms two squares of area <math><msup><mi>a</mi><mn>2</mn></msup></math> and <math><msup><mi>b</mi><mn>2</mn></msup></math> respectively. In the other, the leftover space is a single square of area <math><msup><mi>c</mi><mn>2</mn></msup></math>.

This proof makes for a neat design that I used for my latest watercolour-on-wood experiment.

Photo of the day for 2026-09-21

<img src="/_astro/src.BvZWlHB__Y38dQ.webp" width=1083 height=725 alt=A starboard-hand daybeacon marks a rocky outcropping on the sea at sunset.
The name Tillicum means “friend” or “people” in the Chinook Jargon, a pidgin language used to mediate trade between white settlers and First Nations. Chinook words were then considered the safe choice for naming things without a specific First Nation gifting a name; at the time, reconciliation had not yet begun.

Photo of the day for 2026-09-14

Photo of the day for 2026-09-13

Photo of the day for 2026-09-12

Photo of the day for 2026-09-11

Photo of the day for 2026-09-10

Photo of the day for 2026-09-09

Photo of the day for 2026-09-08

Allspice is one spice

Allspice is just one spice, namely the dried fruit of the Pimenta dioica plant. It’s called allspice because the English thought it combined the flavours of cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove.

There’s an obvious joke in there about English cooking, so I fact-checked it. While the average 17th-century village shop only offered four spices, well-stocked grocers had up to nineteen.

Photo of the day for 2026-09-07

Photo of the day for 2026-09-06

Kulshan from Oak Bay at sunset

<img src="/_astro/cover.2eiorcZP_2nYg5b.webp" width=3636 height=2727 alt=A brightly-coloured painting depicting a distant mountain under a purple, red, and pink sky.>

I’m continuing to experiment with different paint media and styles. This piece is gouache on laser cut wood. The composition is based on a photo I took back in 2007, and the style was inspired by an art kit from Meghan Bellamy I recently did.
