Credit card terminals in Japan are pretty similar to those in Canada — you can use tap (タッチ) or insert your card and enter your PIN to authorize the transaction. But I was caught off guard when paying at a Pokémon Center in Tōkyō: the PIN pad was on a touchscreen with the numbers in a random order!

I have no idea if this is standard in Japan or unique to Pokémon Centers. It’s also possible that other countries have it and I just missed it. It does seem like a helpful security feature: it means your PIN can’t be guessed later based on fingerprint smudges on the screen.
